Several questions about the Master of Social Work program

Several questions about the Master of Social Work program....?
I believe that I gave 100% of my time when I completed my bachelor's degree in Social Work. What will the homework load look like at the Master's Level? Will I be looking at a lot of presentations? papers? I made a 86% on the MAT, have a 3.4 overall, 3.92 in the last 60 hours, do you think my chances are good at getting in? Will I have to interview in front of a panel? If so, how hard will it be? If you can answer even a portion of these questions, I would appreciate it.

The workload is generally greater for any graduate degree as compared to an undergrad degree. In general most MSW programs focus more on papers and presentations rather than tests and quizes. Normative in a semester course is 2-3 papers (usually looking in the 30-45 page range for all papers (3- 10-12 or 2 - 15-20). You will also have more reading. Your GPA should be fine for getting into an MSW program DA

That depends on you! How many classes can you take at one time? It might take 2 years and it might take 8 years,

2
5-6 years, maybe longer if a Thesis is required.

3
2 years full time or 4 years part time of graduate school. 4 to 8 years all together. A thesis or comprehensive exam is required.

4
Typically, it takes four years to earn a bachelor's degree, and then two years after that to earn a masters. I say typically, because that estimation is for a full time student. It depends on the pace you set. If you have a full time job and are taking night classes, it could take a little longer to earn that degree. It depends on how many hours you take per semester. The average full time student will take 16 credit hours, basically 4 classes. Some take more, some take less. A part time student is someone who takes less than 12 credit hours per semester. 12 credit hour semesters are considered full time student, but it can add an extra year on to your degree. Less than 12 can add multiple years. Sometimes, though, it's best for full time workers to do a class or two here and there, because they have other priorities in life, it really depends on you. I hope this helps.

5
You don't indicate if you already have a BA. If you do then it will be 2-4 years depending if you go full or part time. If you don't have a BA, then you should consider a BSW. If you do well (usually a 3.5 gpa) you can apply for advanced standing to most MSW programs allowing you to do your MSW in one calendar year (going full time) or two years going part time. DA

BSW is 4 years like any other undergrad program. MSW is usually a 2 year full-time program, although there may be accelerated or part-time options shortening or lengthening the program, respectively.

2
4-years minimum for your bachelors, but of course it could take longer than that depending on if you enroll full-time or part-time. Basically it all depends on how fast you move through the courses. And about a 2 year minimum for masters, but again all depends on how fast you move through it.

3
4 yrs but rich ppl can get less cuz they get home school. in any field you have a least 4 yrs to complete any master degree. Dr, lawyers takes more yrs

here is an excellent option for you... Google MITSOG to find out more. If you are fed up with today’s politicians, want to make a difference in society or want to join politics but don’t know where to start - MIT School of Government can show you the way. Thank you for your time. This is Rahul Bhatia helping MITSOG nurture leaders who care.

If I were you, I would go to a university simply because the University of Phoenix has become a joke. If you don't have the time to actually go to school or it is hard to fit into your schedule then there are many universities that offer a good portion or all of the degree online. I just googled "master of social work online" and found that Florida State offers an online degree. If you were to follow an option like this then you can have a name on your diploma that is not such a joke and you can also have the flexibility of online classes.

The University of Michigan--Ann Arbor has a dual phd in social work and social science that will allow you to focus on international social work. Their MSW program is also really good. Other good options are Columbia University New York and University of California--Berkeley.

Depending on the school and the degree, I believe you would find Counseling to be a better match for working with at-risk students - if you mean working as a Counselor in a mental health clinic or private provider office. If you mean working as a SCHOOL Counselor, the MSW would probably serve just as well - and some programs design their MSW degrees to meet the needs of School Counseling in particular.

Social work is counseling. You could get your BSW in social work then your MSW in children and family. With coical work, there are more job availabilities.

and what kind of salary per month? an estimate? I hate the offices filled with the chubby or skinny secretaries gossiping about stupid things, and wasting their time on facebook. I think it's called Social Work... You would probably have an office but probably wouldn't be there all that much - that is if you're doing the job RIGHT - since you would be out among the people on Welfare. The only kind of office work where you would be expected to be "part of the gang" would be jobs that don't require a degree of any kind. Check the Web to find out average salaries for Social Workers but from what I seem to have read it is not much at all, even if you move to a big city (where living costs are high), particularly in light of how hard (and unsatisfying) the work IS. But, then, maybe you should have elected to go for a degree that required more effort in School.

Every credible MSW I know of requires you to do several internships, which obviously cannot be done online. The internship requirement often applies even if you have a social work job. http://www.socialwork.txstate.edu/On-Line-Masters-Program.html here is an online degree. ^^^

I'm aware that to be more competitive for master's programs in social work, one should probably have earned his/her bachelor's in a related field such as sociology, psychology, or social work. However, do you know of anyone who earned a MSW with an unrelated bachelor's degree?

It's certainly possible but you would have to check out the requirements of the specific programs you are interested in applying to. Most may require a certain number of courses in social work or a related field before you can apply. You might end up having to take a few semesters of undergrad courses to get caught up. You don't want to walk into a Master's program where you have no experience in the field, it'll be too difficult to keep up and get good grades.

You can't go wrong with gerontology. The aging of the birth cohorts born between 1945 and 1965 (the "baby boom" cohorts) will be the most significant factor increasing the demand for long-term care and supportive services over the next half century. The number of persons aged 85 and over is projected to increase five-fold by 2050. If recent trends continue, experts predict that the number of persons requiring long-term care services (i.e., skilled nursing care, alternative residential care, or home and community-based care) could increase from approximately 8 million to 19 million in 2050 This will no doubt increase demand for long-term care workers, in general, and for professional social workers specifically, because they provide critical services such as care coordination, case management, mental health services and supports, government program eligibility determination, care giving support and counseling.

No, nothing wrong with it, but sounds like your getting screwed with pay. Im also a social worker, I work in a school, and get paid 25 bucks an hour with summers off- paid, and I just graduated last year. 12 bucks an hour sounds like a bachelors level position- you may look into if they are paying you based on your degree- they may have you on the wrong level because even entry level- thats too low. I know high schoolers making 10 bucks an hour without any degree at all.

Definitely get a MSW. I am going to start on mine in the Fall. I am going to concentrate working with children, adolescents and women also. I think that the MSW is a more marketable degree than most. And there is a shortage of Social Workers. I am also planning on taking some courses for Art/Music Therapy. I like the flexibility of the MSW to be able to add those additional certifications. You might want to talk to someone who has a MSW and someone who has a Masters in Counselor Education to give you a better idea of which degree would be best for you. Also you might try talking to an advisor in those Graduate Programs at the college that you are planning to attend. Good Luck!

If the job requires a license then you will need a license in PA. Now if PA and NJ have reciprocity (and they probably do) then you can transfer the license from NJ to PA. You might see what the cost difference is between getting your license in NJ and transferring vs. getting it in PA directly. Even with transferability you will need to probably submit the documentation to PA. DA

You're absolutely never too old, whether for law school, a bachelor's degree or learning to read. However, in your case, given that you have two degrees, the the only things that will make this a waste of time are if you're not sure you really want it or if you're not doing it for the right reasons. Go into it with a good idea of what you want to do and what kind of jobs you'll be interested in. Google those positions and do further research at libraries and bookstores. Don't worry about your age - you're not too old for law school and you're not too old to get hired as a lawyer. Good luck.

no, it's not a worthless degree. I have a friend who did that. She's a social worker, and is considering getting into law. This is a good route because it gives you exposure to the system and you can make connections with influential people. 70% of jobs are obtained not because of what they knew, but because of who they knew!

2
If you get a Masters and a license, it is not worthless at all. It is an excellent career. Just an undergrad degree wouldn't get you much though. Keep doing what your doing...

3
They are not worthless they just dont have extravagant pay. The industry has plenty of openings and you network a lot in this field. You will likely be earning about 35k a year so its far from 6 figures but its a very rewarding job and you can feel good at the end of the day. Also your networking in the field can easily lead you to other better paying jobs in time.

4
No, it's not a worthless degree at all. But you won't ever make a ton of money doing it. It's almost a sick joke in that way-- You'll be doing some incredible amount of Good, but it's not worth anyone's money, apparently. You can change lives, though. I work in underprivileged, urban public schools, and our social workers and mental health professionals are doin' it, for real. Your long term career track seems to make a lot of sense. Again, there's no real money in it, but it's worth so much more. Good luck.

5
Social work is a fine degree if you will go on to earn an MSW. Few people enter law enforcement "later in life". Enter the police academy when you are 21 or 22 if you want a law enforcement career. Social work and law enforcement are about as different from each other as two careers can be. The same thing can be said about the people who work in each career. Few people would be happy in both parts of their life if they spent half of it in each of these careers. Talk casually with some police officers and social workers and you will find that they almost always have totally different personality types.

Very different paths. MSW allows you to be licensed for clinical social work.. meaning you can work in hospitals, clinics, HMOs, and govt agencies to provide mental health services.. Masters in psychology wont get you much. Unable to be licensed as a clinical psychologist since that requires a doctoral degree.

Capella is not a regionally accredited school nor does it have a CSWE accredited social work program. All these online programs will say you can get a degree from them in social work - and I'm sorry to say all you will get is a worthless piece of paper. Without the accreditation you will be SIGNIFICANTLY limited. The truth is there are NO fully online accredited programs. Your best bet is to contact the largest close accredited MSW program (go to www.cswe.org) to search by your location). Many of these will have distance eduction and other options - this is your best bet for now. DA

It depends on what you want to do. Additionally, not all states (in fact most) allow you to practice psychology at the master's level independently without supervision from a Ph.D. level psychologist. If you want to do therapy, work for child protective services, do medical social work, then a master's degree in SW is sufficient. If you want to have your own practice as a licensed psychologist, then likely you will want to consider a Ph.D. program in psychology. School psychology is the only specialty within the field that lets you get licensed without long term supervision by a Ph.D. level psychologist in most states. Typically, this will involve testing children for learning disabilities and working for a school system, although I am sure there are school psychologists doing different stuff.

Thanks, for the question. There are prerequisites in graduate studies which cover sociology and social psychology and to answer the question hopefully, psychology can bring you into several fields of work and these will all nearly put you at close intervals with humans. The message you are reading was taken in consideration that you are human and you have emotions also, many Ph.D. even here at our school are so far away from being human they must think in terms of equations and words are a solution to the problems we face in life. I have a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology at the Western Illinois University and a powerful tool to have in your belt of knowledge is to understand human nature, without this there is only terms and concepts to deal with and you may find yourself lost in the shuffle. Look at the job market, a master's in either is adequate to teach in any college. Good Luck. Volunteer Counselor Western Illinois University

It depends BOTH on what you want to do and your theoretical orientation. The MSW is the most versatile degree allowing you to both clinical work (individual, group, family), administrative work (program development, program evaluation, grant writing), Community work (organizing, advocacy, development), Policy work, Caswwork and much more. The MSW also focuses issues of social justice, poverty, "isms", person and environment and much more. It is holistic, and really attempts to address social problems and the challenges that this causes for individuals, families, communities and organizations. Psychology focuses more on the individual and looks at internal issues as the primary point of intervention. Many (if not most) states license at the MA level in psychology, counseling, or marriage and family therapy. Now each of these are different to some degree but have more in common with each other than with social work. Social work includes all that is available in these fields - and more. If you do an MA in psych you MUST make sure that the degree is licensable (some MA's are only research based and set you up for a good PhD program) All these degrees also have PhD level options - but this is like comparing apples and oranges. The PhD will open doors because it is a higher level of education. The PsyD is yet another option, similar to the PhD in psych but less of a focus on research. DA

Masters in Counselor Education is to become a school counselor or guidance counselor. In my opinion the Masters in Counselor Education is very limited to what you can do with it. A MSW will allow you to work in almost any field. In NYS after you graduate from an accredited MSW program you can take you licensing exam if you pass you are now a LMSW or licensed Masters Social Worker. In order to practice therapy in NYS you get you pass the licensing exam you have to supervised epmployment for at least 5 yrs under a license clinical social worker (lcsw). After the 5 yrs are up you take file the neccesary paper work and exam and wha for the state to certify you

Not sure I understand the question. Sounds like you already have it figured out.

2
Just go for the Master's degree. Your psych background will be helpful during your studies.

3
Many psychology majors decide to opt for a Master's in Social Work. All you need to do is apply to grad school. You shouldn't have a problem getting accepted as long as your GPA and GRE scores are acceptable.

4
You don't have to relate anything. Most social work grad students are psychology majors. You have a clear idea where you want to go and have tailored your course work accordingly. As long as you have good grades, solid recommendations, and decent GRE scores, you will be fine.

Can I work from home with a Master's in Social Work

Can I work from home with a Master's in Social Work?
I have a Master's in Social Work. I've been trying to find options that would enable me to work from home and stay with my 5 month old daughter. Any suggestions on what I can do with an MSW from home?

Work from home that relates to social work? No, I don't think so. People who work from home have a particular area of expertise that allow them to work from home -- professional translator, professional graphic designer, professional editor, web designer etc. There are obvious elements of these jobs that can be done remotely. But social work? Also, the aforementioned are people who have worked outside of the home first, and use the connections and references they make working outside the home to eventually freelance from home. And they also have to work at least a few days onsite at whatever company they are supporting. Plus, you've just said you need to stay home with your baby -- that implies that you don't have time to work outside the home, and for employers, that means you also don't have time to work *from* home. If you want to stay home with your daughter, then by all means do so and be focused on her. You could look into volunteering from home for very short-term projects that don't have anything to do with social work. The United Nations has a database of such projects (all unpaid), at http://www.onlinevolunteering.org VolunteerMatch has a database of these as well, but note that many of the projects listed as "virtual" aren't. You will hear from a lot of people who are going to send you various web addresses saying there are work-from-home businesses, but I have *never* known anyone ever made any money from these.

2
First of all, anyone can work from home. If you have a Masters degree in Social Work that means that you have a wealth of knowledge and experience that could potentially benefit millions of people worldwide. While you will not be able to sell social products or services from your website, you can without a doubt focus in on your niche somewhere in the realm of social services and make loads of money off of ad sales. If you provide quality content, engaging your readers in a pleasurable and interactive environment you will build a loyal audience. If you want to keep things extremely simple, sign up for goodle adsense and google will put ads on your website, generating you income every time a viewer clicks on the ad displayed on your website. The only thing you have to do is continue providing quality content on your website. If you have no idea how to make a website, don't worry, either did I a year ago. There are so many programs out there that will guide you through building your own website. Trust me, it is nice to be able to say that you can build a website when your friends talk about how mystifying the whole internet is :) Building the skill set necessary for making money online is not something you can learn overnight. However, if you cut out all of the scams and focus on real opportunities you will springboard yourself in the right direction. The first step in pursuing a career online is education. Utilizing the Internet as a medium for conducting business is great as long as you understand how it all works. Due to the impersonal nature of the Internet, it is very easy for someone to scam you. They never even have to look you in the eye. Trust your gut when you read about products that will make you rich in a matter of weeks. This simply is not possible without developing some sort of breakthrough website or technology. You can though, start building an online business focused on real business ideas and strategies. You will need a guide to get you going in the right direction. A potential free resource site you may want to check out is http://edaptedstudents.com/ The site is targeted at college students but is extremely well written, so it does not really matter how old you are. They will realistically break down for you what you can expect from operating an online business and the actual tools you will need to succeed online. The fact is, you must have some tools to launch an online business. All of the reputable products needed to begin your online success come with money back guarantees. I wish you the best of luck in your business ventures. Please just remember, education is the key to success in any venture. Lastly: The internet is an information superhighway, so never let anyone tell you that you cannot make money online utilizing your personal knowledge and experience.

Assuming they use the ASWB exams (and most states do) there are 170 Questions. Here is the site for info: http://www.aswb.org/exam_info_faqs.shtml... DA

2
Master’s programs in Social Work offer a structured, 2-year curriculum of courses required for licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.). With a Social Work Master’s degree, you cannot practice as an independent, unsupervised counselor / therapist / social worker until you are licensed. To obtain the license, you must complete a Master’s in Social Work, complete 3,200 hours of supervised post-Master's work, of which at least 2,000 hours are direct clinical experience, and pass a written and oral competency exam. Each state has their own licensing requirements, so if you plan on practicing in a state other than California, check into the requirements of the state in which you will be living. yes, because his issues could help someone else and to see your concern could show someone the true meaning of compassion

2
Sure, exploit your brother's problems for your own advancement.

3
maybe you should get a consent from your brother first.

4
If you write in a kind and understanding manner about his experience, don't tell him you wrote about him, and conceal info so no one can figure out it's him that should be fine.

5
~If you have to ask the opinion of folks on this site regarding what you should write for your master's, you don't deserve the degree.

6
I dont see a problem with it providing you dont mention hes your brother or his name. You're working on counceling..think about confidentiality.

Anyone with a bachelors can apply to the J.E.T program and teach in Japan for a year. Google JET.

2
ask your state...if you have a masters, they don't always want the masters in teaching...(even if they do, they will hire you and let you take classes at night..)

3
You might be able to do some teaching at the college level, but you won't be able to become a professor. I did that on the side and enjoyed it a lot.

4
community college's usually require a master's degree to teach in a given field

5
You should be qualified to teach social sciences. You will just need to get a teaching certificate from the state. Each state has different requirements, look it up. Getting a teaching certificate shouldn't be a very long process (a couple months tops)

6
I dont believe you could unless you wanted to teach college because they dont require a teaching degree only a masters or p.h.d for elementry high school you have to do more school and get a teaching degree...or become a teachers aid but thats not a good option...

7
Pray to me and I may grant your wish...

8
To teach in a public school system, you will need a teaching certificate (from the state) and most of them require you to have a teaching degree. A few states have a "professional entry" path where is someone agrees to supervise you, you can work as a teacher and after a while get your certificate without a formal education degree. Worth asking. Other options: try private schools, which often don't require teaching certificates. Or if you want to teach social work, a community college might hire you with only your masters degree (paticularly if you have an MSW and work or have worked as a professional social worker)

9
Many school districts want to hire people from the workforce and will get them emergency certifications. But most teachers have to do "professional development" to renew their certificates. This means more classes. You had better try out teaching before you invest in it by taking classes. It's not like it used to be. It's a lot of very hard work which is unappreciated. Much of it is now paperwork. You have to write detailed lesson plans and teach what the state tells you to teach. The creativity is gone. My advice to you is to call up some nearby schools and introduce yourself. Maybe the principal will hire you. Also, you could substitute teach to see how you like it.

10
I have a friend who wanted to become a doctor. He never was accepted at any of the medical schools he applied to and enrolled in a school of osteopathy. He is intellectually very honest and got thrown out of the osteopathy school during his manipulation classes when he said that osteopathic manipulation had no therapeutic value. His undergraduate degree was in biology, and, of course, he greatly increased his scientific knowledge while he was a student of osteopathy. He came back to Los Angeles, and is now working as a substitute teacher even though he has taken no education courses. He should be highly valued as a teacher once he is fully credentialed because of his math and science background. I think that if you came to Los Angeles, you could immediately find work as a substitute teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School district. In time you may get a job as a long-term sub lasting about a year or so. This will enable the principal at the school to get to know you better. If he or she likes you, he may hire you as a permanent teacher while you work for your credential. Good luck! Harleigh Kyson Jr.

11
You only real option will be to teach within a private school. - You may be able to get a provisional license in some states as you go back and work on the credential. Now if you want to work in special education your MSW may work to you advantage. You might also look at a charter school or alternative school - in some of these places you degree and experience working with youth at risk would be seen as an advantage. DA

How can I make a living off a social work masters

How can I make a living off a social work masters?
I am starting college next year and am planning on majoring in social work and then going on to get my masters. But I also want to make a living. I know I'm not going to get rich...but what kind of jobs in social work make $60,000 plus? I'm also considering a double major in criminal justice and becoming a social worker in that area.

Not only is this profession not known for getting rich, it's known for being very poorly paid. As much as public school teachers and police officers complain about their pay being too low - social workers tend to earn even less. Only the top 10% of all social workers earn over $60K according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos060.htm These are likely the social workers with significant experience in the field. Median for all social workers is only $43,580 and some specialties have a median $10K less than that. If $60K income is your primary motivation then you might want to consider Engineering, Computer Science/IT, or the business specialties. Alternatively, you could get your bachelor's in social work (BSW) and then get an MPA (Master of Public Administration) and then, after some work experience, move into the administration of social services. Those people make good money but it requires years of experience and a master's degree.

2
I have worked as a social worker all my life and have made a good living. I worked in Canada and Australia and in my last job earned over $70,000 pa. The salaries tended to be award based, and when a worker has several years experience ,they increase. There is always work to be had as a lot of people don't last as it is not an easy job, in any field. Management opportunities are always there, however. I chose not to do this path, as I liked the human contact stuff. Now I am retired and have a reasonable Superannuation, but I can always get a part time locum, or work a private practice. So it is flexible.Very rewarding work, can be quite exciting and dramatic - never boring!

3
The answers here are all right, it is a lower paying field, but it can pay well, it depends on your experience, who you work for, who is funding the agency, whether you are working directly for the goverment. Specifically, which jobs earn the most? *giggles*, youve made me laugh, ive been in the field for a few years now and would like to know the same. The more experience you have, and the more education you have, the more places will be bidding to hire you, at that point you can be choosey as to where you work, and make the decision to work for a higher paying position, or a lower paying position that in all honestly, youll probably like more!

4
Your best chance of getting a higher paid social work job would be to either go into administration or to become a social work professor. Alternatively, if you work entirely in private practice, you can make 60K plus a year.

Yes, but you have to be under supervision of a licensed Counsellor, Psychologists or Psychiatrist. After 3-5 years supervised work you can apply for your own license.

2
Yes, the BSW will prepare you well to go on for an MA in counseling. However, you may want to seriously consider applying for advanced standing in an MSW program, thereby saving yourself a year of school and tuition. The majority of psychotherapy is done by people with an MSW. Now if you have no appreciated the social justice focus of your BSW program and/or some other part of social work - then leaving the profession may be a good choice. If you are just thinking you want to focus on individual clinical work and think the MA in counseling will be a better choice - you may want to talk with your adviser or other faculty about clinical MSW programs (there are many good ones). Just like most degrees in the "helping professions", there are a wide range of jobs to be held with an MSW degree. You can work in a hospital as a Med. Soc. Wkr., a school, a skilled nursing facility, as a hospice SW, in law enforcement, in a dialysis unit, with foster children, in child protective services, and the list goes on and on. The varying difference (aside from the job duties) is often pay. Working in the medical field and in govt. agencies tends to be more lucrative, unless you go into therapy and are able to establish a thriving practice. With that being said, the career as a whole (in my opinion, and that of polls throughout the web LOL), Social Work is a VERY BURNOUT field with low pay, in comparison to other less stressful degree areas. There tends to be high turnover rates for this reason and we often hold jobs in agencies that you deal with a lot of "politics" and conflict with advocacy vs. the goals or "agenda" of the employer. Finally, (on my soap box) I feel that the profession has way too many hoops that we have to jump through to obtain employment. Earning the degree post-grad and otherwise is NEVER enough. Passing licensure exams, paying fees, obtaining continued CEU's are just some of the requirements that you will face after graduation to gain/keep employment. I was unaware of some of these obstacles until after graduation. Hope this provides some insight and I hope that I don't sound TOO negative. Remember to keep "self-care" as a priority if you choose to continue in this profession.

Questions about education and social work master's

Questions about education and social work master's?
I was a biology major, and switched to sociology, and am minoring in psychology. I hope to grab one more minor before I finish, religion. So I will have my Bachelor's in Sociology, minor in psychology and religion. I will be graduating with a 3.1-3.2. It would have been higher without biology dragging it down. I would have loved to have been a social work and education major, but it didn't work out that way. wasn't meant. I want to do social work and education. I was wondering is there a way I could double major, in social work and education. What jobs are open to me with just a sociology bachelor's? With a social work master's? Eventually if I took a break and wanted to be a middle or high school teacher, how many years of schooling would I need. What kind of degree? Just an education master's. I'm thinking of teaching either english or history, one day.

I'm assuming you are asking about a joint MSW/Med and not doing a second "major"? There is one program that might fit your eclectic interests: http://artsci.wustl.edu/~jines/jointdegree.htm In general if you are going to want to teach you will need a teaching certificate in teaching (in the area and age level) you want to teach in. Doing a joint degree will take 2-3 years. Getting a teaching certificate can usually be done in one year. DA

Yes you certainly can, I did so with a degree in Business. Most schools will have pre-req psychology classes but it is nothing out of this world. Most schools dont require you to have work experience or volunteer experience related to counseling. Some people that want to become counselors go for liberal arts or general studies bachelors degrees and take electives in psychology so they can meet the requirements to be admitted into counseling programs. Some colleges that will allow you to do so are Liberty University, Mid America Christian University, Evangel University and many others. Don't give up it is not that hard!

2
Yes, I had a BA in philosophy. I had taken a course in psychology as well as statistics. It could be good to also do some volunteer work as well if you can before applying. A lot of literature discusses issues of family, poverty and relationships so you can also write about how your interest in literature ties in with social work areas. Meditator

I'm applying to a Master of Social Work program. What should I discuss in my personal narrative

I'm applying to a Master of Social Work program. What should I discuss in my personal narrative?
My GPA in my first years of undergraduate study were a B average. I suffered some hardships in my sophomore year, which caused my GPA to drop tremendously. However, in my last 60 hours of undergraduate study, I have managed to achieve around a 3.5. This actually shows that I have overcome a lot. How should I word this in my personal narrative without being too detailed about my hardships? How will the grad admissions board view it, especially when a professor can talk about what I have overcome also?

In your narrative just explain how you worked really hard your freshman year and how some hardships came about and that you struggled to successfully overcome them. You succeeded in doing so by getting such a super high GPA in your last couple of years of college proving to yourself and everyone else around that you can succeed no matter the obstacles thrown in your path. Good luck with grad school!

2
Mention your hardships and what you have overcome. However, focus more on why you want to get a Master of Social Work. Discuss your goals for the future. Good luck!

3
I applied for a Master in Public Health and my undergraduate GPA was much lower than yours was( 2.7). I was accepted in all the school I applied to and did explain my low GPA in my essay. I explained about what happened to me personally that indirectly or directly caused my GPA. You have to be truthfull in your explanation. Do not focus a lot on the explanation though, focus on what you have done that is related to Social work. Outline your career goals and aims and support your essay with facts and figures. It shows someone who knows what they want and what they are talking about. Personally, before I began my application process, I did not think my GPA would affect my admission. I had a very positive attitude towards it and never worried about it. I spoke with a lot of faculty members as well. However, I am an international student and in addition I also had a very strong GRE score. All the best

With an MA in Soc you should be able to answer this on your own! MSW is clinical practice applications, with very practical requirements (how to id signs of abuse, eg) whereas MA Soc is academic. Also, practicing MSW/CSW usually requires State-level licensing.

2
Master of Social Work and Master of Sociology pretty much run together.

They are not equivalent but you can apply for that job.
