Master's of Social Work vs. Master's in Counselor Education

Master's of Social Work vs. Master's in Counselor Education?
Hello, everyone! What are the differences between getting a Master's degree in Social Work and one in Counselor Education? I am looking at going to graduate school to become a therapist (preferably for children, adolescents and women) but I'm not sure which degree I would need, or which degree would be a better asset to the counseling/therapy field. I know this sounds like a silly question, but what are the differences between a Master's in Social Work and a Master's in Counselor Education? Thanks in advance! :)

Masters in Counselor Education is to become a school counselor or guidance counselor. In my opinion the Masters in Counselor Education is very limited to what you can do with it. A MSW will allow you to work in almost any field. In NYS after you graduate from an accredited MSW program you can take you licensing exam if you pass you are now a LMSW or licensed Masters Social Worker. In order to practice therapy in NYS you get you pass the licensing exam you have to supervised epmployment for at least 5 yrs under a license clinical social worker (lcsw). After the 5 yrs are up you take file the neccesary paper work and exam and wha for the state to certify you

Not sure I understand the question. Sounds like you already have it figured out.

Just go for the Master's degree. Your psych background will be helpful during your studies.

Many psychology majors decide to opt for a Master's in Social Work. All you need to do is apply to grad school. You shouldn't have a problem getting accepted as long as your GPA and GRE scores are acceptable.

You don't have to relate anything. Most social work grad students are psychology majors. You have a clear idea where you want to go and have tailored your course work accordingly. As long as you have good grades, solid recommendations, and decent GRE scores, you will be fine.

Can I work from home with a Master's in Social Work

Can I work from home with a Master's in Social Work?
I have a Master's in Social Work. I've been trying to find options that would enable me to work from home and stay with my 5 month old daughter. Any suggestions on what I can do with an MSW from home?

Work from home that relates to social work? No, I don't think so. People who work from home have a particular area of expertise that allow them to work from home -- professional translator, professional graphic designer, professional editor, web designer etc. There are obvious elements of these jobs that can be done remotely. But social work? Also, the aforementioned are people who have worked outside of the home first, and use the connections and references they make working outside the home to eventually freelance from home. And they also have to work at least a few days onsite at whatever company they are supporting. Plus, you've just said you need to stay home with your baby -- that implies that you don't have time to work outside the home, and for employers, that means you also don't have time to work *from* home. If you want to stay home with your daughter, then by all means do so and be focused on her. You could look into volunteering from home for very short-term projects that don't have anything to do with social work. The United Nations has a database of such projects (all unpaid), at http://www.onlinevolunteering.org VolunteerMatch has a database of these as well, but note that many of the projects listed as "virtual" aren't. You will hear from a lot of people who are going to send you various web addresses saying there are work-from-home businesses, but I have *never* known anyone ever made any money from these.

First of all, anyone can work from home. If you have a Masters degree in Social Work that means that you have a wealth of knowledge and experience that could potentially benefit millions of people worldwide. While you will not be able to sell social products or services from your website, you can without a doubt focus in on your niche somewhere in the realm of social services and make loads of money off of ad sales. If you provide quality content, engaging your readers in a pleasurable and interactive environment you will build a loyal audience. If you want to keep things extremely simple, sign up for goodle adsense and google will put ads on your website, generating you income every time a viewer clicks on the ad displayed on your website. The only thing you have to do is continue providing quality content on your website. If you have no idea how to make a website, don't worry, either did I a year ago. There are so many programs out there that will guide you through building your own website. Trust me, it is nice to be able to say that you can build a website when your friends talk about how mystifying the whole internet is :) Building the skill set necessary for making money online is not something you can learn overnight. However, if you cut out all of the scams and focus on real opportunities you will springboard yourself in the right direction. The first step in pursuing a career online is education. Utilizing the Internet as a medium for conducting business is great as long as you understand how it all works. Due to the impersonal nature of the Internet, it is very easy for someone to scam you. They never even have to look you in the eye. Trust your gut when you read about products that will make you rich in a matter of weeks. This simply is not possible without developing some sort of breakthrough website or technology. You can though, start building an online business focused on real business ideas and strategies. You will need a guide to get you going in the right direction. A potential free resource site you may want to check out is http://edaptedstudents.com/ The site is targeted at college students but is extremely well written, so it does not really matter how old you are. They will realistically break down for you what you can expect from operating an online business and the actual tools you will need to succeed online. The fact is, you must have some tools to launch an online business. All of the reputable products needed to begin your online success come with money back guarantees. I wish you the best of luck in your business ventures. Please just remember, education is the key to success in any venture. Lastly: The internet is an information superhighway, so never let anyone tell you that you cannot make money online utilizing your personal knowledge and experience.

Assuming they use the ASWB exams (and most states do) there are 170 Questions. Here is the site for info: http://www.aswb.org/exam_info_faqs.shtml... DA

MasterĂ¢€™s programs in Social Work offer a structured, 2-year curriculum of courses required for licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.). With a Social Work MasterĂ¢€™s degree, you cannot practice as an independent, unsupervised counselor / therapist / social worker until you are licensed. To obtain the license, you must complete a MasterĂ¢€™s in Social Work, complete 3,200 hours of supervised post-Master's work, of which at least 2,000 hours are direct clinical experience, and pass a written and oral competency exam. Each state has their own licensing requirements, so if you plan on practicing in a state other than California, check into the requirements of the state in which you will be living.
