Is a Master's in Social work worthless? I live in Texas.?
I am trying to decide between a master's in social work, rehabilitation counseling or school psychology ... I really want to have a career that pay at least 3,500-4,000 a month and I have opportunity to advance. All 3 careers interest me, and I plan to apply to all 3 programs but IN YOUR OPINION which would be the best career and why? Thank you I am an excellent listener.. in fact I am known for that. I know my counselor has a master's in social work and she works for the university... thanks for refreshing my mind

The MSW is the credential for you to be a licensed psychotherapist. I have many associates who have this degree, jobs in counseling, and private practices on the side. Are you a good listener? If not, this is definitely not the career for you.

The MSW is a very good degree. In some states you will need continuing education classes . After you get your degree it is important to get licensed as most insurance companies require that. Many social workers have part-time private practices to supplement their jobs. However, getting a job as an administrator can also be good paying as a social worker. You can also work as a counselor at a university with the social work degree which can be very fulfilling. Meditator

I would either do a double major in sociology and business, or get at least a minor in socio. Different social work programs have different requirements, so look around to get an idea of what you'd need. Most programs need you to have *extensive* volunteer work. So start now. I volunteer with the John Howard Society, and I love it. It has a very "social work" oriented philosophy. Good luck.

Your masters degree does not have to be related at all to your undergraduate degree. Your company might not be willing to pay for your degree, however, if you stray from their guidelines for education reimbursement. Talk to your human resources department.

Yeah you can pretty much get your master's in just about anything, however, you need to check into a graduate program and see what pre-reqs you need to get into that specific program, it shouldn't be much. If you want to get a master's in social work that would be a good field, they usually make pretty good money. So get yourself together becuz with social work, you will be touching people's lives...

I don't think so. Most M.S.W programs want someone who has a B.S.W degree. Some schools are exceptions however and will only accept someone with a Social Science background. Even then it is much harder to get in and you would have to stay an extra year longer to finish all of the prerequisites that are needed.

Can I do a masters in social work with a degree in primary school teaching

Is my degree relevant to social work?

Probably not, other than the fact that you have a Bachelor's degree. You won't have taken enough courses in the social sciences to have the "foundation" for social work, although you may be able to make up for it by taking extra courses in grad school. Go to the website of some schools with MSW programs and see what they require for admission.

Talk to a school you are interested, and see what they say. If your interested in a school then im sure the school will be willing to work with you.
