Master's of Social Work vs. Master's in Counselor Education

Master's of Social Work vs. Master's in Counselor Education?
What are the differences between getting a Master's degree in Social Work and one in Counselor Education? I am looking at going to graduate school to become a therapist (preferably for children, adolescents and women) but I'm not sure which degree I would need, or which degree would be a better asset to the counseling/therapy field. Thanks in advance! :)

If you're going to be a therapist, then I think a Master's in Counselor Education might benefit you more. Social work is a broad field.

In your opinion what is a better degree to have, a Master's in Social work or Master's in education

In your opinion what is a better degree to have, a Master's in Social work or Master's in education?
I like teaching and I like education. I thought about being a history teacher one time, but I think my heart is more into counseling people. I have a sociology major with a psychology and religion minor. I am thinking about applying to a Master's in social work program, but I would also like some sort of degree in teaching. If I get a Master's in social work, and then my license as a Licensed social worker, what kind of degree could I pursue to become a teacher- in middle school or high school in the one of the fields of social studies, history, psychology, religion, and sociology. well i already have a bachelors degree in sociology. i had 2 minors when i got my bachelor's degree one in psychology and another in religion.

With a MSW you can go right into being a school guidance counselor. You could double major in a subject and social work and get your Masters in Social work this way you can do an alternate route to teaching should you change your mind.

2
I would get the teaching degree with a teaching certificate. If you ever want to teach your are going to need that.

3
Well you should go ahead and get your Master's in social work but perhaps you could also get a teaching certificate.

4
For teaching, you need to get a teaching certificate, in addition to a bachelor's. The laws might vary by state. You can get a bachelor's in teaching, or you may find a certificate program for teaching, if you have bachelor's in something else. You can also, of course, get a master's in teaching, which might give you a higher income. As far as which is better, between social work and teaching, you are just going to have to follow your heart. They are both rewarding career paths.

I want to get a Masters in Social Work. Which Bachelors degree should I seek

I want to get a Masters in Social Work. Which Bachelors degree should I seek?
My community college only offers the Bachelors in Human Services and Associates in Human Services. They don't have a social work degree. If I transfer to a university in order to get a BSW, I'll lose a ton of my credits. Is it worth it in the long run to lose the credits and go for the BSW? Or should I save some time and money, go for a Bachelors in Human Services and seek immediate entrance into a MSW program?

Yes.

2
A BS in psychology is one way you could go. Regards, Brandon

3
Most community colleges offer a degree designed specifically to transfer to a 4 year school in a particular field. You need to go to the schools advising office and let them know what you want to do so you can get on the correct degree plan. Most arrangements have finally been taken care of so you won't loose any credits when you transfer to the 4 year school. But I suppose it could be too late for that, especially if you have been going to school for a while... if that's the case, id just go for a bachelors in Human Services and seek immediate entrance into a MSW program. But call that department just to make sure.

4
I would say that it would be best to transfer to a BSW program at a 4 year University. With that being said, you probably will not have gotten all of the courses you need from your Community College to be able to be selected into the BSW program. You will have to take more core courses most likely once you transfer before you can apply to be accepted into the BSW program. I would say however that it would be worth it. I was an advisor at a 4 year university for the BSW program in Alabama, but it could be a little different in your state. Check with the University that you are wanting to transfer to and also the Advisor at your current college. Good luck!!!!

Masters in Social Work or Bachelors in Spanish

Masters in Social Work or Bachelors in Spanish?
I currently have my bachelors in social work, and recently became licensed. I was accepted into UC's social work graduate program a few weeks ago, yet something I have always regreted was not pursing Spanish in my undergrad studies. Not only is the Hispanic population growing in this country, I always thought it would be great to do some international work. Would it be more beneficial to stick with going for my masters, or should I go for a bachelors in Spanish? Any suggestions would really help me out!

A Bachelor's in Spanish will give you some verbal ability but will concentrate more on the literature. Follow the master's programme and take a night school course in spoken Spanish. Once you can speak it, you will be able to read it as well.

2
Depends on if you want to work under supervision or have a shot at your own license. A masters will get you that shot the BA will not. You can always take Spanish at a later date.

3
It is unclear if UC is University of California, CT, or Cinncinati. If it is CA you could easily do your internships within a spanish community assuming you already have some competence in the spanish language. Being able to do conversational work in spanish would greatly build your skills. Also unless you have a lot of time and money going for a BA in spanish will not get you very far. You would be better going to south america or mexico and taking an intensive language course and pursuing either an MSW or a related MA in international work. It almost NEVER makes sense to go back for another BA. You have learned what you needed to learn in the BA in terms of your development. Certainly taking courses is a good idea always...but doing another degree is rarely necessary or needed. DA

I'm currently a college student looking towards a major in Social Work. I know that I will absolutely have to get a Masters in social work. Are there any other similar majors/fields that I could get into where I could still help people but possibly not have to get a Masters degree? Psychology would be better. Even if you end up doing social work, you still have more varied knowledge and more career opportunities.

3
This is exactly what I did, and it's been very helpful in my work as a psychotherapist, especially since social work graduate programs do NOT turn out good therapists without additional training and/or post-graduate work as a clinician. If you want to work in other aspects of social work, you do not need the psych undergrad, though it might help. You'd be better off having business and management skills, as well as a second language, or expertise in working with developmentally disabled or forensic populations. Good luck.

Frankly, I know nothing about this view. Nowadays, it seems like more and more people committed crimes. We shall always see them on TV. `BONES` is one of the American TV series that reflects in this view. Sometimes, you can see victim`s body already rotten and smell... to catch the criminals from crime scene to autopsy using DNA scientific technique to catch the criminals. The most interesting ones are the serial killers ones. I feel very gruesome but I still want to see them. Sometimes, late in the night or very early at dawn, America `NBS` news have a program called, `Dateline` always have the real ones occurring in real life. Anyway, your job is no easy thing. The dead talks! You`re as busy as a bee searching for facts to catch the criminals. And you talk and work for them. Even cases that had been sealed for 30 odd years, as long as you could get a tiny hair or anything, you`ll pin the criminals. As long as you can get something else from the crime scene or anything within your tracing scopes, you`ll bring a case into broad daylight. Cold Case!

Masters in Clinical Psychology or Social Work?
I will be receiving my bachelors in Psychology in June. I want to be a counselor for people with Eating Disorders. Does it make a difference if I am an Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or a Licensed Mental Health Worker. What is the difference between a masters in Social Work and a masters in Clinical Psychology? Basically... what is the best to counsel people with E D's?

I'm a social worker. Licensing varies state by state. In NY a psychologist CANNOT be licensed at the masters level. Most therapists, etc in NY are social workers. I know that NY is not the only state like this. See what your state is like and think about whether you plan on moving out of state anytime in the future. As for the difference in theory. Social work traditionally looks into the interior reality of the person & the community/world around the person while psychology is more focused on what's going on inside the person. However, many social work programs have clinical tracks which make the education/focus pretty close to that of a psychology major. Find a school that seems to match your interests. If you are anywhere in the NYC area, there is a good post-masters institute for eating disorders: http://www.wtci-nyc.org/.

Every social worker I have ever met, including myself, hates their job. You'll see more tragedy than you will ever be able to fix, and it will leave you emotionally scarred. Please, for the sake of all that is holy, go for physicians assistant. That having been said, I find that people who believe social work to be their calling and are very passionate about it are somewhat immune. But if you aren't one of those, don't follow in our footsteps!

2
Always choose the career path that will grant you satisfaction. If you're in love with your job, you end up doing a good job, and you might get good raises or even convince future employers that you are worth more and get a really good starting base salary. Being stuck in a job that you don't like but are doing it for the money will lead you to depression. No joke.

3
A recent issue of FORBES noted that Social Work is the most poorly pain professional field in the U.S. After 20 years, I agree. You'll find much better pay and more job opportunities as a PA, and the jobs will likely be less stressful. If you really want to make good money and have lots of job opportunities, become an RN. Good luck.

With your MSW you should be able to qualify for a short certification course in addiction counseling; you may also be able to find a position in a clinic where you'll have some supervision and be able to learn on the job. School counseling work is similar. I'm no social worker, but I've had a supervised course in clinical pastoral education in a general hospital, and met with all kinds of folks. Dealing with addicts can be a challenge; one of the key symptoms of that disease is denial (which means they're often trying to BS themselves and their caregivers). Dealing with teens is a different kind of challenge. Both kinds of work call for inner strength and also for teamwork. I would guess that your happiness will come from the team you're part of.

talk to your college advisor about your choices.

2
Wow you are so lucky! I wish I could get a master's degree. Definitely nursing. There is always a job available. Also, social work you will definitely feel underpaid.

3
Follow your passion. You can always go to nursing in the future. If you have a Bachelors, a nursing degree only takes two years. If you want to be a social worker, then do that.

4
A MSW will open up far more professional (i.e. higer paying) options than the nursing degree, but the markets for the different fields will be smaller. With both you could go into work with the elderly, handicapped, or disadvantaged, albeit in different capacities. However, the MSW would allow you to look at counseling and therapy options as well, depending on your course of study and internships. Nursing can be rewarding, but is more limited in career growth, and there is definitely more of a trend to be overworked, underpaid, and under appreciated. IMHO in the long run, you might be better served by a MSW, but it really depends on what aspect you end up specializing in. (I'm in grad school myself for Higher Ed, so I guess I'm biased) Good luck!

What ever. Your choice You have a choice of two noble occupations . What ever you feel comfortable with and mainly enjoy and feel you can excel in . I use the word noble because in the field you are treading into is 1 Under paid 2 Under staffed 3 Under funded And most people in England have the same view . Maybe America? Either way tread your path and be the best at what you choose. Hey Maestro the crowd is chanting (EASY EASY EASY EASY Easy easy )

6
You should get your degree in social work instead of nursing. It will give you more options after you get your degree and there are a ton of different fields within that category. You will be better off with social work over nursing. Good Luck! http://www.adelphi.edu/hauppauge/

If you like LOTS of stress, you can certainly try, but you might consider living there a month or 2 b4 making a decision like that. Things are not easy in JA and the "soon come" attitude will drive you nuts despite your good intentions.

2
Do extensive research before you decide to live in Jamaica. A job as a social worker will not pay you very much. Basic housing, food and general things to get by can be really expensive.

3
To be totally honest with you, I live here and it would be rather difficult for you, but , it's still possible if you are connected with the appropriate people to assist you. Our infrastructure here is very poor, and to be honest there is more corruption taking place than not..(that's why i said if you have the right connections you will do well).. We are also facing a very tough economic time now, as you may know..it's a "world economic crisis", and trust me it's getting harder for alot of persons here. Over the past 2-3 yrs we have faced a closure of three (3) major investment schemes and a few minor ones. Most of these schemes were being invested in by alot of the very persons you would want to assist, and they have lost alot of money. I could go on, but i would say just do a market research and analyse whether or not "at this time" it would be economically viable for you...

2
Hi, First of all, you can't get an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) designation till after you complete the MSW (Masters in Social Work) degree. Here's how it works in NY: You get the MSW and sit for the state licensing exam to be an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker.) You can counsel at that point, under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or LCSW. After three years of experience, you may sit for the LCSW exam, and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. And by the way, in the NY state universities, you do NOT need a GRE to apply to a masters program, only a doctoral program. Regarding social work licensing and admission requirements, each state has their own requirements and some do it a little differently. Feel free to email me. Kate BS Psychology Currently in grad school earning an MSW Graduate Assistant, conduct the information sessions for prospective MSW students at my university

3
Other people have basically answered the LMSW question properly. The important thing here is that a license is different from a degree. A license is designed for a state to verify you have the skills/experience/training to do the job you want to do. A degree welcomes you into a profession. You can be a social worker without a license, but you can not get a license without a degree. Now as for where to get your MSW. North California East Bay has a new (they are in candidacy) MSW program with a community mental health option. This would work for licensure. In CA after you finish your MSW you apply for ASW status then it is 3200 hours, 2000 clinical 750 of which must be psychotherapy and 1200 can be either clinical or other contexts. Master of theological studies vs. master of social work

Master of theological studies vs. master of social work?
Hi all, I'm currently enlisted in the U.S. Army as an MP and have completed a BA in International Affairs from Baylor University. After two years of enlisted service I have decided to go back to school and concurrently pursue Army ROTC to earn a commission. I know that after earning my commission and completing graduate school that I'll be engaged in active duty service for at least four years. The one thing I'm questioning now is the post-military relevance of a degree in either theological studies or social work. I have an interest in both fields, but am having trouble deciding on which to pursue. I want to help the poor and oppressed with all of my energy either in or out of a faith-based organization. I also need to support myself and perhaps a family after my military service. What do you think about this situation? Any advice? Thank you in advance.

What kind of jobs are out there in counseling or social work

What kind of jobs are out there in counseling or social work?
I am trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up (I am 31 years old! LOL). I majored in Psychology and am leaning toward counseling or social work. I want to get my masters now that the kids are older and will all be in school soon. With a masters in social work, one can counsel, as well as do social work. My question is to all those out there in similar fields: what is your masters in and how do you like your job? Any other suggestions? I have been out of school so long I really don't know where to start. Thanks!

Try being a guidance counselor in the school system. Then you will have the same hours as your kids' school days.

2
anything you want to work in you can find a job. Companies who have nothing to do with counseling keep couselors on staff to deal with employee family situations confidentially. Just go for it, with good grades and a positive attitude there are plenty of jobs to chose from.

3
Hi Airy, I think it is far more important to settle in your mind what you want to achieve as a counsellor. Your experience with your own children would be fantastic as would your time away from the workforce. I think you could make a fantastic professional statement to the industry. Attitude more important than academia, IMO.

Another person asked this question earlier- here's what i wrote him: 1) you can pretty much do anything you want with a psych degree The different fields that you can go into for research psychology are: Abnormal psychology- the study of abnormal behavior Cognitive psychology - studies cognition, the mental processes underlying behavior Comparative psychology - the study of the behavior and mental life of animals other than human beings Developmental psychology - Mainly focusing on the development of the human mind through the life span Personality psychology studies enduring psychological patterns of behavior, thought and emotion, commonly called an individual's personality Psychometrics- study of differences between individuals. Like the difference between intelligence, abilities, attitude, etc... Social psychology is the study of the nature and causes of human social behavior, with an emphasis on how people think towards each other and how they relate to each other (one of my favorites) Applied psychology - psychological research that is designed to help individuals overcome practical problems Clinical psychology is the application of abnormal psychology research to the understanding, treatment, and assessment of psychopathology (the field that I'm going into) Counseling psychology - dealing with personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span with a focus on emotional, social, vocational, educational, health-related, developmental, and organizational concerns. They differ from clinical psychs because they focus more on the 'nomral' developmental patterns and everyday stress. Educational psychology - the study of how humans learn in educational settings Forensic psychology is the area concerned with the application of psychological methods and principles to the legal arena (another one of my favorites) Health psychology -the application of psychological theory and research to health, illness and health care Industrial and organizational psychology (I/O) - Industrial Psychology focuses on improving, evaluating, and predicting job performance while Organizational Psychology focuses on how organizations impact and interact with individuals Human factors psychology - the study of how cognitive and psychological processes affect our interaction with tools and objects in the environment So...yea you can pretty much do everything with a psychology degree

5
You can study just about anything with psychology...but you will have a hard time getting an actual job without a PhD. Counseling is great if all you want to do is do individual, group, or family therapy. Social work is a better degree if you know you want to work in human services and are interested in donig many things from administration (developing programs), work across systems (individual, family, community, etc.). Over time Social work is a more versatile degree, giving you more options. DA

It depends on the state and if your degree was from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Different states have different requirements for social work licenses. You should check the state that you want to move to and contact the child welfare system there (eg, the Department of Social Services) for the county. For instance, I live in Detroit where we have a number of people with foreign degrees because we are right next to Canada. Canadians who work in Detroit often have difficulty getting a social work license from the State of Michigan. There's a process for having your foreign degree and experience recognized but it's often an arduous process. Depending on where you move you might have to take additional classes or have a limited license until you have a year or two of supervised social work experience in that State working under the direction of a fully licensed MSW.

It depends on how long your Social Work program is - in my university the Social Work Program is 3 years, and to get your Masters would be another 2 years.

Is a Master's in Social work worthless? I live in Texas.?
I am trying to decide between a master's in social work, rehabilitation counseling or school psychology ... I really want to have a career that pay at least 3,500-4,000 a month and I have opportunity to advance. All 3 careers interest me, and I plan to apply to all 3 programs but IN YOUR OPINION which would be the best career and why? Thank you I am an excellent listener.. in fact I am known for that. I know my counselor has a master's in social work and she works for the university... thanks for refreshing my mind

The MSW is the credential for you to be a licensed psychotherapist. I have many associates who have this degree, jobs in counseling, and private practices on the side. Are you a good listener? If not, this is definitely not the career for you.

2
The MSW is a very good degree. In some states you will need continuing education classes . After you get your degree it is important to get licensed as most insurance companies require that. Many social workers have part-time private practices to supplement their jobs. However, getting a job as an administrator can also be good paying as a social worker. You can also work as a counselor at a university with the social work degree which can be very fulfilling. Meditator

I would either do a double major in sociology and business, or get at least a minor in socio. Different social work programs have different requirements, so look around to get an idea of what you'd need. Most programs need you to have *extensive* volunteer work. So start now. I volunteer with the John Howard Society, and I love it. It has a very "social work" oriented philosophy. Good luck.

2
Your masters degree does not have to be related at all to your undergraduate degree. Your company might not be willing to pay for your degree, however, if you stray from their guidelines for education reimbursement. Talk to your human resources department.

3
Yeah you can pretty much get your master's in just about anything, however, you need to check into a graduate program and see what pre-reqs you need to get into that specific program, it shouldn't be much. If you want to get a master's in social work that would be a good field, they usually make pretty good money. So get yourself together becuz with social work, you will be touching people's lives...

I don't think so. Most M.S.W programs want someone who has a B.S.W degree. Some schools are exceptions however and will only accept someone with a Social Science background. Even then it is much harder to get in and you would have to stay an extra year longer to finish all of the prerequisites that are needed.

Probably not, other than the fact that you have a Bachelor's degree. You won't have taken enough courses in the social sciences to have the "foundation" for social work, although you may be able to make up for it by taking extra courses in grad school. Go to the website of some schools with MSW programs and see what they require for admission.

Talk to a school you are interested, and see what they say. If your interested in a school then im sure the school will be willing to work with you.

Would it be wiser to obtain a Masters in Social Work or a Masters in Counseling

Would it be wiser to obtain a Masters in Social Work or a Masters in Counseling?
I spoke with a friend recently who told me the Masters in Social Work was a better idea since you can do counseling plus other things. Is this true? Why would anyone want to become strictly a counselor then if they were able to do both? I would like to hear knowledgeable answers as this decision is looming as graduation is just around the corner! My bachelors degree is going to be in psychology with a minor in business administration.

i think you go for the masters in social work because First, the public has more familiarity with it; most people have heard of a social worker and have a general understanding of the MSW degree. Secondly, you can be credentialed/licensed in all states with it. Thirdly, insurance companies have no qualms about reimbursements for social work degree in masters.. If you go for counseling, be sure to check the requirements for independent practice in your state as your degree may or may not prepare you. However, a masters in counseling can allow you to do much the same as an masters in social work.OK after completing your bachelors degree you should take right step in a proper way.

Having had 200 hours of Dianetic auditing I find it the best form of counseling ever offered anywhere. What is very true about mental difficulties is that once the auditor discovers the "force of an event or decision" is encountered with the guiding of the auditor it is completely released once the event(s) or decision(s) is/are reviewed. The joy that erupts when the audited person achieves RELEASE is an incredible experience to watch or participate in! Try learning to audit others. Psychology doesn't accomplish anything near the happiness obtained in ridding the mind of the effects of former events and decisions!

Many states will not grant a license to someone with a masters in counseling, but with the msw (after meeting the requirments) you can take the licensing exam. Agencies often want someone with the msw who is licensed to be able to join insurance panels. Also, at least in florida, for work at assisted living facilities, the msw is preferred due to medicare reimbursements. Meditator

With only a bachelor's degree, your job opportunities are very limited. Being a daytime attendant in a group home would be an example. The competition for these low-paying jobs is surprisingly tough. With an MSW, your job opportunities in the profession are unlimited and the pay can be six times or more as high, especially if you become licensed as an LCSW or the equivalent in your state and open your own practice.

The absolute best course of action to obtain a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) is to first get your Bachelor's Degree in Social Work (BSW). If you major in Sociology or Psychology, you will end of having to take all the undergraduate level Social Work classes as a graduate student. It will take you an additional 1-2 years depending on how many courses you take per semester. Some colleges offer part of their social work programs online, but in order to get a BSW or MSW, you are going to need to attend a 4 year college or university. There's really no way around it. You will also have to complete two internships in your course of studies. Make sure that the social work program that you attend has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. This is extremely important as the majority of jobs require this. As for salary, there are very few social work jobs that will pay what you are looking for even with a Master's Degree. Even those in administration often times do not make that much. You will have to have worked many many years in the field before you can expect that type of salary and many never acheive it. Good luck to you. I hope I answered some of your questions.

Anna3 has no clue what she's talking about. Most MSW programs will accept people with any bachelor's degree to promote diversity in the school. You may have to take a class or two as a prerequisite - I took statistics and a research class, and my undergrad was in political science. I am in the IUPUI program and despite what the ill-informed "anna3" seems to think, you do NOT have to take social work courses since you don't have a bsw in social work. The faculty here have devised an intensive 8 session "immersion" course, then you start your normal classes. After receiving the MSW and getting your license, your compensation depends on you. Some people work for the state, some in private practice, some in research/teaching, others in hospitals. Most are moved up to supervisory or management positions very quickly. You will make good money, as starting salary is around 40k. It goes up from there, and there are many ways to do more side work if you want. Please, pay no attention to the childish, ill-informed people who think they'll be making 6 figures their first year out of an MBA program. That's not going to happen, and it's not an honorable goal to begin with. Social work changes you for the better, and allows you the empowerment to really help other people in your area of practice. Money is a part of it, but it has heart and is about more than the greed and pursuit of money. Also, there are many loan-forgiveness programs for students after graduation. Check out the IUPUI MSW program.

Thankfully, many if not most Masters programs do not require an undergraduate degree in the same field. In fact, many masters programs prefer individuals with different undergraduate degrees; these individuals offer a different viewpoint on material and also gives you, the student, a more broad understanding of business. Check out the link to find a Masters program for you. Good luck!

good question, I often wondered this myself when making my decision between an MSW and a Phd or PsyD in psychology. phD programs in psychology are open to anyone with an undergraduate degree, though having certain pre-requisites does help and may be necessary. You likely will need to take the GRE and have some statistics and experimental psychology under your belt as well as a certain amount of credits in psychology. Programs are very competitive, however, and going for a masters in psychology may prepare you better for competing for a phD spot. Very few people can go from an undergrad straight to a PhD program without lots of experience in the field, which is hard to come by with a bachelors degree. You may also consider a PsyD, which sometimes does not require a dissertation and tends to be less research focused. I am completing an MSW at the moment and I can tell you that there is no transferring credits from one program to another. Although the fields can have identical scopes of practice in terms of clinical work especially, they are considered two different fields of study. Call be biased, but there are advantages to an MSW over a psych PhD, but the psych PhD will give you more prestige and in-school experience as well as a more medicalized quantitative approach to mental health. A psych PhD can run from 5-7 years of education not including externships, and can be very expensive. An MSW is typically 2 years unless you have a BSW at which point it might be one year to complete. You then sit for licensing exams to become in most states a Licensed Master of Social Work. 2-3 years in the field fulfilling certain roles can get you a second clinical license which enables you to practice psychotherapy independently, including having a private practice. Outside of performing psychological testing, you are qualified to perform basically all of the roles a clinical psychologist can. The programs differ in approach and your interests in mental health, your pocket book ,and length of study can help you determine which program is best for you. There is more to consider about the differences in programs, feel free to e-mail me! If you have any further questions, you can find my e-mail address at my blog www.goaskjo.blogspot.com

I'm going through almost the same thing. I have one more year of undergraduate left and I'm thinking of career choices. But from what I got from some professors, MA in psych might not be that useful, you might have to go for PhD, which takes much longer, as I'm pretty sure you know already. Also the pay is worse for Social work, so that's an important factor. I'm pretty sure psychology is also broader once you get the PhD, you can do other things besides just therapy if you ever get bored. Also, many people who want to get PhD after getting an MSW do so in Psychology. That's all I know.

2
Depends on if you want to manage a McDonald's or be a cop? Seriously, I was thinking about how these masters degrees seem to mean so little compared to a MBA. Search online job sites for the kind of things you would like to so and see what they require.

3
MFT, or the equivalent, is a state-by-state licensure. They are mostly counseling therapists, although not able to administer tests (must be a PhD). LCSW is more social work, but can have own practice to do therapy, if licensed. The LCSW is also able to take more forms of insurance, an can work in the government setting. MFTs are trained more in psych, and counseling techniques such as; marriage and family, behavior, drug and alcohol, adjustment, and so on. It really comes down to personal preference, and what setting you would like to work in. In Ca. the demand is currently greater for LCSWs, which is a licensure with MSW.

4
I went through this same thing when I was in school and I didn't know I would need a doctorate in psych. For me it never happened. So I also considered the MSW. It is a two-year terminal degree. In my experience, it is more oriented to social issues, and social work doesn't have the depth of theory in terms of clinical work. That said, some of the very best therapists have the MSW. I agree that there is little use for the masters in psych. If you are sure you can't go for the Ph.D. then you would do well to choose an MSW program in your area of interest. Both fields have trouble with reimbursement because of the emphasis on short term therapy instead of dealing with the abuse and childhood trauma issues that demand long, diligent work for patient and therapist. In some states...maybe all...MSWs have to be signed off on by psychiatrists or psychologists to be paid by insurance. And in a few states, psychologists now can prescribe medication. I think they are both good fields where a good therapist in private practice can be innovative and creative and do much good.

5
Well the biggest difference is they are two totally different professions with very different philosophical orientations. Social work is primarily concerned with social justice and clinical work is considered a part of what social workers do, but all social workers are concerned with social justice and by professional ethics are directed to address the multiple sources of oppression. Psychology is primarily concerned with intra-psychic issues, concerns and depending on which school of psychology unconscious desires. Now as for licenses - The LCSW is the most respected (largely due to how long the license has existed and the rigor of the accreditation process for schools of social work. You have two other options for licenses at the MA level - the LPC (licensed professional counselor) and the MFT (marriage and family therapist) - both are much newer (some states have them both others only one). The rigor of the accreditation of these MA programs is much lower. DA

Just make sure the school is accredited. You can check out www.usajobs.gov for some of the military positions. Companies like Spectrum will also hire Social Workers for military bases.

That can vary with the school. You probably can, but you will likely have to take some extra classes to make up for what you missed in not majoring in social work at the BA level. To make sure, contact the school you want to do you masters at and ask your questions.

It depends on why and how you left the program. It you left or were asked to leave due to poor grades then you should indicate in your letter how you would be able to succeed this time. Since most graduate programs will not allow you transfer in credits you can not go to a second school to prove you can do Graduate level work. If you left for any reason other than poor grades such as family reasons you should indicate in your letter how you can balance school with the obstacles in life. In your letter don't beg, as it makes you look insincere but I would be firm. Ask the director if you can come back as a conditional student which mean you would have to have a certain GPA (usually 3.0) each semester in order to stay in the program. If you left due to grades be honest in the letter do not sugarcoat the issue.

Masters in counceling is for those who want be be a lisenced professional councelor (LPC) Masters in social work is like for the goverment working with placing children in homes or working for a group home. You could also be a case manager for a mental institution PsyD- doctorate of psychology is for psychologists

Master's in Counseling = 2 years in school. Focuses primarily on different techniques for counseling (school, therapy, drug counseling, etc.) PhD in Counseling (Psy-D) = 4 years in school. Focuses primarily on the above things, but now you are a Dr and you can have your own practice. These people are "Psychologists." You cannot prescribe medicine unless you do the M.D. portion in which case you would become a Psychiatrist. PhD in Human Services = 4 years and more of a social work/Human resources field. This is for people who want to run the health and human services aspect of a business want to become the owner/coordinator of a human services or social work environment (non-profit management). Master's in Social work (MSW)= same as above without the extra 2 years. Master's or PhD in Psychology = these people may become professors, researchers, therapists (although not Psychologists), or depending on the field of study you can do consulting (either environmental, organizational, or otherwise). A Master's degree is only 2 years and a PhD is usually 4 years. Most of the time you don't need a Master's to get a PhD (which is a doctorate of Philosophy). It looks like you're struggling between counseling, social work/human resources, and general psychology. Considering your degree is in comm, I'd consider counseling or social work. Psy can be brutal with all the statistics, biology you need to learn. But don't take my word for it. Look into the programs at the colleges and see what they think.

Yes, you can. The counselor I used to go to has some sort of social work degree. Social work is a broad field and you can do a lot with it (counseling, patient/hospital stuff, mental health care, you can work with troubled kids and stuff like that) There's a lot you can do.
